Toledo Ice Crew

Dear Returning Toledo Ice Crew Participants,

The intent for the 2018-19 season is to offer two separate programs… Rec Hockey & Learn to Play. All returning players should register for TOLEDO ICE CREW “REC HOCKEY”. We expect all sections of the Toledo Ice Crew will fill up.

Toledo Ice Crew-Rec Hockey:

Participation in prior year’s Toledo Ice Crew required. The focus will be on continued skating development and playing hockey in a fun, high skill growth environment. We will group kids by age and skill level and play cross-ice hockey to maximize development.

Toledo Ice Crew-Learn to Play:

Learn to Play will look similar to last year… a structured lesson plan providing a foundation of skating know-how and confidence building. Feel free to register for Toledo Ice Crew-Learn to Play if your daughter or son is not ready for Rec Hockey. Prior year’s players may repeat this program.

Click here to register online today. “Pre”registration for Toledo Ice Crew is open thru Sunday, October 28. Registration will open to the general public on Monday, October 29. Please reach me at if you have any questions.

GOAL: Create a healthy, sustainable and equitable ice hockey community. The program is entering its second year of operation.

INITIATIVE: Increase opportunity and participation by providing access to ice facilities, equipment, skating and hockey programs to girls and boys in underserved (people of color and females in particular) communities. The Toledo Ice Crew is not merely about athletics. It is an opportunity to provide at-risk youth with a chance to learn the great sport of ice hockey, develop lasting friendships, receive on-ice and off-ice instruction with regard to what it takes to be successful in ice hockey and daily life.

On-ice instruction provided by USA Hockey trained coaches in a fun, relaxed, safe, and organized environment. The weekly lesson plans follow the USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM) with emphasis on skating, puck control, stopping, passing, turning and shooting.

  • For girls and boys ages 4-13 years
  • No experience preferred
  • Players divided into age-appropriate groups on-ice
  • Learn ice skating and basics of hockey (prepares players for league play)
  • Players currently in another local hockey program are not eligible

REC HOCKEY (Option #2):

  • Some skating experience OR participation in last year’s program preferred
  • Players divided into age-appropriate groups on-ice
  • Consists of skill development sessions and scrimmage games
  • Players currently in another local hockey program are not eligible

WHEN: The 2018-19 session runs from December 15, 2018 thru March 27, 2019

  • 14-16 total ice touches (weather permitting)
  • 45-50 minutes per ice touch

WHERE: All ice times are at Ottawa Park Outdoor Ice Arena… except initial ice time/equipment issue which is at Tam-O-Shanter. The final ice time is at the Huntington Center (home of the Toledo Walleye).

COST: Both programs are FREE! Ice time, equipment, skates, jersey, and USA Hockey registration included. Players keep jersey, stick, and sox at end of session. All other equipment is returned at end of session.
