Hailing from Genoa, Ohio, Meyer brings a wealth of on-ice experience and coaching expertise to the position, setting the stage for positive growth in youth hockey development.
Meyer’s journey in hockey began long before this recent appointment; he honed his skills playing NCAA Division 1 hockey at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. There, he distinguished himself as a key player, finishing his career with 56 points over 93 games. His senior season in 2020-21 was particularly notable, as he served as team captain and finished second on the team in assists and third in overall points. His leadership and skill were recognized when he earned a spot on the Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team in 2017-18, as well as selection to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team for three consecutive years (2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21).
Meyer also made his mark in junior hockey, playing for respected teams including the Fargo Force and Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and the Springfield Jr. Blues in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). His experience across various levels of competitive hockey equips him with valuable insights that he is eager to share with young athletes in the community.
While Meyer’s playing career speaks volumes about his talent, his commitment to fostering the next generation of hockey players is equally impressive. For the past five years, he has served as an instructor with SPD, where he has dedicated himself to teaching fundamental skills and the strategic nuances of the game. His hands-on coaching experience is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing the development programs offered by Tam-O-Shanter and Sylvania Youth Hockey.
In addition to his hockey accolades, Meyer brings a professional background in accounting, having most recently worked in the accounting department at Checker Distributors. This blend of analytical skills and sports experience positions him uniquely to create a structured and effective hockey program.
As Hockey Director, Grant Meyer aims to implement a strategic vision that emphasizes skill development, sportsmanship, and a love for the game. His leadership is expected to bring new energy and expertise to Tam-O-Shanter and Sylvania Youth Hockey, ensuring that young players are not only prepared for competition but also enriched by the life lessons that come from participating in sports.
